European Region remains polio-free

2018 was held in the European Region, there is no Transmission of polio virus. A panel of experts for the eradication of Poliomyelitis reported as polio known. Introduced and spread the polio virus would be detected by existing health and surveillance systems immediately.

Professor David Salisbury, Chairman of the expert panel, congratulated all the countries for timely submission of their annual reports and presented evidence that the European Region is polio-free. He stressed that the countries population immunity through high vaccination coverage is maintained. Also the Surveillance and control measures for the detection of Poliomyelitis and the reaction to the introduced virus are still required.

Nevertheless, it was found in four countries, a need for improvement: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, the Ukraine and Poland there was a lack of sufficient immunity in the population, plans to prepare for an outbreak and/or the Monitoring.

The WHO regional office for Europe supports countries in their preparations, for example, by Developing and conducting Exercises to simulate polio outbreaks. The resulting findings will be shared with other WHO regions, and thus contribute to the global response readiness.
