Maca is a Peruvian plant grown in the Andes mountains. It is a cruciferous vegetable and is related to broccoli, cabbage and kale.

Maca root plant can be ground up into a powder and added to meals or smoothies.

Maca is also known as Peruvian ginseng and is a South Amercian root vegetable.

Maca has several health benefits with increasing libido being one of the main attributes.

The most well-known benefit of maca root is its potential to increase libido.

In a 12-week study, Maca was compared with a placebo.

The study aimed to demonstrate if the effect of Maca on subjective reports of sexual desire was because of effect on mood or serum testosterone levels.

The study involved men aged 21 – 56 years and received two doses of Maca.

The study noted an improvement in sexual desire observed with those using Maca in a eight week treatment.

What has the expert said?

Dr Adriane Fugh-Berman, associate professor of pharmacology at Georgetown University, said: “Because maca is a food, it’s probably safe to try.

“I recommend you skip it if you have an oestrogen-sensitive cancer or condition because it could raise your oestrogen levels.

“If you have sexual side effects from antidepressants or any other medication, ask your doctor if you can change your medication before you turn to a supplement.”

In another study with BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the effectiveness of the maca plant as a treatment for sexual dysfunction was analysed.

The study concluded that the results of the systematic review provided a little bit of evidence showing the effectiveness of maca in improving sexual function.

Maca was also proven to help reduce sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women who were taking an antidepressant.

Maca root also has benefits for people with erectile dysfunction, boosting energy and endurance, increasing fertility and improving mood.

Some athletes and bodybuilders use maca root as a supplement to increase energy and performance.

Dr Fugh-Berman added: “Before trying an herb or supplement, think about what you can add or subtract from your life.

“Exercise, weight loss, treating a condition or changing a medication could all help.”
