Although the 2021 CrossFit season is officially over, five-time reigning Fittest Woman on Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey is still training hard and competing… even if her only opponent is her coach and husband, Shane Orr. In their latest YouTube video, Tia challenged Shane to a “Fittest in the Relationship” challenge.

The plan is to do a five-round workout that serves as a spin-off of CrossFit’s notorious Cindy WOD, usually a tough bodyweight AMRAP challenge featuring pullups, pushups, and air squats.

“I certainly don’t want to do a 20-minute AMRAP of Cindy, so I compromised,” says Shane. Instead, they decide to do five rounds of five strict weighted pullups (with a vest, wearing 20 pounds each), followed by 10 bench presses (at 115 pounds for Shane and 85 pounds for Tia), and 15 reps of front squats (again 115 pounds for Shane, and 85 pounds for Tia).

Tia notes that she hasn’t worked out much in the three weeks since the CrossFit Games, so she isn’t sure how she will perform. But she plans on winning the challenge. That doesn’t psych out Shane though—he’s ready to raise the stakes of the competition. “We should actually get a belt, like a championship belt between you and I, and every month… we’ll engrave our name for the winner of that month,” he suggests.

Tia, however, has a champion’s mindset. “Shane, I will win every time,” she says.

In the first round, Shane takes an early lead after the pullups—but he waits for Tia after she mistakenly jumps ahead to the bar for front squats, skipping the bench press. He leads through the entire second round, but by the front squats in the third round, Tia catches up.

Going into the fourth round, she takes the lead, then doesn’t give it up for the rest of the contest. Although they are neck and neck at the end, Toomey takes the W.

“How I feel about it? Torn. I probably need some time to process this,” says Shane sarcastically. And he plans for a rematch next month—with some more dedicated training for their couple challenge.
