Can an influx of launches stimulate the prestige market?
Prestige beauty has experienced little growth over the past year, according to data from The NPD Group. The $18.7 billion market saw the most growth in the hair category, which grew 19 percent to $790 million from August 2018 to July 2019, according to NPD. Skin care was the second fastest-growing category, up 6 percent to $5.7 billion, followed by fragrance, which plateaued at $4.4 billion. Makeup became the worst-performing sector, falling 5 percent to $7.8 billion.
As the numbers might suggest, prestige beauty is due for a makeover. Here, WWD highlights some of the key launches hitting the market this fall.
Byredo
The newest from Byredo is Slow Dance, a genderless eau de parfum incorporating notes of opoponax, aka sweet myrrh; geranium; violet; vanilla, and patchouli. The scent, which launched earlier this week, retails for $260 for 100-ml. and $165 for 50-ml.
Pat McGrath Labs
Pat McGrath Labs has had a busy year of retail partnerships, including a shop-in-shop at Bergdorf Goodman and a buzzy rollout at Selfridges. The latest from the makeup artist is a new eye palette, the Mothership VI: Midnight Sun palette, which consists of 10 astral-inspired shades. Priced at $125, the palette will be sold exclusively on the Pat McGrath Labs' web site starting Sept. 6.
La Prairie
Earlier this week, La Prairie debuted a serum for the whole eye area — brows included. Featuring a dual-chamber vial, the Skin Caviar Eye Lift, $480, features a blend of active ingredients, including Caviar Extract, that is meant to refine eyebrows, tighten upper lids, smooth skin and reduce puffiness and lines.
MAC Cosmetics
MAC is expanding its Studio Fix family with the Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick. Designed to last 24 hours, the medium coverage foundation stick is geared toward makeup minimalists on the go. Starting Sept. 5 it will be available in 33 shades at all MAC locations and online for $23.
Jo Malone
Jo Malone is turning to its British roots for its latest scent, Poppy & Barley. The fragrance, which was originally part of a limited-edition collection, is a floral mix of rose, violet and blackcurrants. Launching Sept. 1, it will retail for $70 for 30-ml. and $140 for 100-ml.
Armani Beauty
In keeping with beauty's antipollution trend, Armani Beauty will debut a mask aimed at clearing aging pollutants from the skin. The Crema Nera Reviving Volcanic Mask, which will launch in October, is formulated with Reviscentalis, a plant that is said to be capable of living through the harshest of environmental conditions.
Atelier Cologne
Patchouli is proving a trendy fragrance ingredient. Atelier Cologne's latest scent, Patchouli Riviera Cologne Absolue, blends patchouli with pomelo and pink pepper — all renewable ingredients. The fragrance will launch exclusively in Nordstrom stores and online in October.
Sisley
Sisley's newest makeup remover has de-polluting properties. Formulated with peony extract, pro-vitamin B5 and ginkgo biloba extract, the Radiance Foaming Cream is meant to refresh and purify skin. Priced at $120, it will launch in September at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys New York.
Oribe
Oribe's forthcoming launches, which will be available Sept. 3, are geared towards scalp health. The Serene Scalp Thickening Treatment Spray, $76, aims to treat thinning hair with densifying polymers, while the Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub, $52, uses alpha hydroxy acids and glycolic acid to purify the scalp.
