You have to hand it to Gwyneth Paltrow. Regardless of where you stand on her scented candles, vaginal steaming, or the infamous jade egg controversy, the woman has navigated controversy with unwavering confidence. Hers is a mentality that cares little for outside opinions: sure Goop has its objectors, many of whom simply scoff at the lifestyle brand’s latest wild “wellness” offerings, but Gwyneth doesn’t care and perhaps it’s this attitude that makes the brand one of the most dominant in the lifestyle space.
It seems that same sense of inflated confidence has risen once again, this time in a recent interview with The New York Times, which saw the Goop founder claim that she started the face mask “trend”. When Gwyneth was asked about a selfie she posted back in February of 2020 – one in which she was wearing a US$75 mask by company Airinum at a time where face masks weren’t even mandatory – the actress replied, “This is a familiar pattern in my life. I do something early, everyone is like, ‘What is she doing? She’s insane.’ And then it’s adopted by the culture.”

You’ve got to hand it to Gwyneth, the woman has started a few trends in her time. From endorsing the Tracy Anderson method before the fitness mogul was a household name, to coining the phrase “conscious uncoupling”, the star has certainly paved her own way and never been hesitant to go where others dare not tread. But, we can’t help but shake our head on this one, with the framing of face masks being a trend she popularised, rather than something global citizens took up in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus.

If that wasn’t enough, Paltrow’s claims aren’t exactly substantial. The face mask she was pictured with in the February selfie had air vents, something health authorities have since labelled as “not recommended” as it was discovered respiratory droplets could escape the holes and infect others.
Clearly not done with being the first to don a mask, Gwyneth also reveals in The NYT piece that she didn’t wear the mask for an event she attended in France, and ended up contracting COVID-19. The star claims she was ahead of the curve, being “one of the first people that I had heard of to have it.”
