High cholesterol: Nutritionist reveals top prevention tips
High cholesterol can lay the dangerous groundwork for heart disease, which is considered a major killer.
After statins, a healthy diet is the most potent way to slash your cholesterol levels.
But it’s not only what you eat, but also what you drink, according to Chemist and Tea Researcher, Dr Tim Bond, from the Tea Advisory Panel.
Drinking chamomile tea daily could see your levels of the waxy substance fall, consequently lowering your risk of heart disease.
The reason why chamomile offers heart-healthy benefits comes down to its antioxidant content.

Dr Bond said: “Chamomile herbal infusions are abundant in flavones, a type of flavonoid antioxidant.
“Flavones reduce cholesterol synthesis and increase the activity of LDL receptors on cells which means that LDL [“bad”] cholesterol is removed from the blood.”
Don’t just take the expert’s word for it, as research, published in Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, found that chamomile tea could lower high cholesterol by about 18 percent.

Looking at 64 people, the research team asked the participants to enjoy either three cups of the herbal tea or hot water daily.
The findings showed that chamomile tea was able to cut “bad” cholesterol and total cholesterol as well as triglycerides, which are another type of bad fat in the blood.
Due to these abilities, the herbal tea can also reduce your risk of heart disease.

Dr Bond said: “Because chamomile herbal infusions lower cholesterol, particularly “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides without altering HDL (“good”) cholesterol, this tea can reduce the risk of heart disease.
“This same study also found reductions in levels of insulin and markers of poor blood sugar control, which can also contribute to reduced heart disease risk.”
If you’re not a fan of chamomile, the expert added that black tea could also be up for the job and benefit your cardiovascular health due to its flavonoid content.
