Who is young, cares often little to his health. With increasing age, the concern for the physical well-being grows mostly. Old – the many desire. But much more important is it to age for as long as possible without physical Suffering and diseases. How can this be achieved?
A study published recently in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), provides guidance on how a health-conscious life style could look like, with the succeed. Hence, men can win with the right life style for up to seven years in good health. In women, this estimate is still lush: A healthy lifestyle helps you in an average of ten Extra years of life, you can spend free from cancer, heart problems, and type 2 Diabetes.
For the study, researchers evaluated the data of around 111,000 people in a period of about 20 years. At the age of 50 years, the study had to specify participants, whether they fulfilled at least four of the following five criteria:
50-year-old women, who fulfilled at least four of the five factors lived on average 34 years of age, free of Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In the case of women who met none of the five criteria, there were, on average, only 24 years. Health-conscious men spent an average of 31 “healthy” years. In the case of rather careless of men, however, were only 24 years old.
The healthier, the better
The more factors, the participants met, the better: in Principle, the number of healthy life years increased with each additional factor. Even small Changes in everyday life could be paid. On the other hand, certain health-damaging behaviour seem to have a particularly hard weight in the to: Bad maps have, therefore, men who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day, and obese people with a BMI of over 30. You have to expect in the age of 50 years, statistically, complaint free years with the lowest number.
Since this is an observational study, there is no evidence the team of researchers led by Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, ultimately, that the life style factors were crucial for the observed effect. However, this suspicion is obvious, since many diseases are encouraged by health-adverse behaviour. Studies show that Smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and excessive alcohol consumption account for up to 60 percent of premature deaths. Alone, Smoking cigarettes is in connection with the development of more than ten different types of cancer.
Study leader Frank Hu of the meaningfulness of the publication, convinced and called it “a positive message for the society”. A healthy life-style will lead not only to more years of life, but also to more life-years can be spent in health.
