Camila Alves McConaughey is on a mission to make healthy food more fun — by taking on one picky eater at a time. The model, author, and entrepreneur’s new book Just Try One Bite, which was released on March 22, tackles the challenges of incorporating fruit and vegetables into meals, all through an entertaining picture story with an unexpected twist.

In McConaughey’s book
, the kids are the ones trying to get their parents to improve their diet and “put down the ice cream, cake, and chicken fried steak to just try one bite of healthy whole foods.” The first-time author told SheKnows that she wants to reshape the ways that families talk about healthy eating, and she’s dead-set on not being preachy about it.

“I don’t want it to be tough on parents because guilt is already so much [of what] we experience as parents,” she explained to SheKnows. “That’s why I like this book. It’s a great way to start or continue the conversation in a very funny way because it’s reverse roles. The kids are actually getting after their parents for eating all the junk stuff.”

McConaughey added that she hopes parents have open, thoughtful conversations with their kids about food choices, rather than just dictating what goes into their mouths. “The earlier you do that…you’ll be setting your kids up for a lifelong of good habits versus not talking about it, fully ignoring it, and [saying] ‘you’ve got to do this, you gotta do that.’ The earlier you start, the better and easier you’re going to make it for them.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean that McConaughey is all healthy food, all the time. Her kids can definitely indulge in sweets like donut holes or ice cream, it’s just about moderation and balance. Again, it comes back to those thoughtful conversations. “We have a lot of dialogue,” she tells SheKnows. “I really like the kids to be able to express themselves and how they feel.”
