Adam Sandler’s done it again. He created not one, but two creative masterpieces — and, no, we don’t mean his new movie, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. I’m talking about the girls who star in the Netflix comedy: his daughters Sunny, 14, and Sadie, 17. They are beautiful, funny, unexpected delights, and they had me from the first, “Dad, you’re so embarrassing!”

Sandler, who also stars in the movie along with wife Jackie Sandler and Idina Menzel (aka Queen Elsa), takes a step back to let his teenagers truly shine in this coming-of-age film.

The official logline: “BFFs Stacy [Sunny] and Lydia are both planning epic bat mitzvahs. But it all unravels when a popular boy — and middle school drama — threaten to ruin everything.” Stacy has a room full of Taylor Swift posters and a heart that longs to be popular. Sadie plays Stacy’s older sister, Ronnie, who would rather watch horror movies and nap with her best friend rather than go to the theater with her dad. She’s the calm to Stacy’s drama, and they play the parts so well I forgot they were acting.

Yes, these two are nepo babies, but they’re also just really freaking funny — and emotional and dramatic and silly and dumb. Just like all teenagers. This movie is full of all the ups and downs you’d expect from a middle school perspective, like backstabbing BFFs and mean girls, with a healthy dose of social issues thrown. (It’s not a movie about Gen Z with jokes about climate change and gay TikTok!)

We can totally imagine that the way the family ribs and connects in the movie — with Sandler and Menzel’s characters playing the parents of Stacy and Ronnie and Jackie’s character playing the mom of Stacy’s best friend Lydia — was inspired by many similar moments at home. And in another way art imitates life, Sunny had her real-life bat mitzvah just before filming.

“What’s really funny is right before we started prepping for the film, Sunny had her actual bat mitzvah,” Sammi Cohen, the director of You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitvah told PEOPLE. “So I went to that service, and we got to do the real-life bat mitzvah and then left to make the movie. It was a really fun life movie moment.”

He dished that it was a great time. “It was really, really fun. And it was, again, it was just such a perfect moment of life meets movie. It was just magical.”

I’ll admit it: I turned on this movie because I wanted a peek at the Happy Gilmore actor’s family. But I kept watching because it was full of heart and tons of laughs, and now I’m a huge fan of the second-generation Sandlers. They aren’t kids anymore (they have their periods and everything!), so Sunny and Sadie are ready to be movie stars. And we will be right there to watch everything they do next!
