Equinox Levels Up Spa Offerings for First Hotel

Equinox is building out its spa category, starting with its first hotel location.
The fitness club chain has drawn buzz for its debut hotel, located in Hudson Yards. Naomi Campbell appeared in a campaign for the new establishment, for which celebrity stylist Kate Young designed staff uniforms.
On Oct. 25, Equinox Hotel Hudson Yards officially opened its spa to the public. Spanning 27,000 square feet, the spa boasts an indoor saltwater lap pool, hot and cold plunges and E.scape pods that overlook the Hudson River. There is also a vast menu of treatments — cryotherapy, infrared sauna, quantum harmonics sessions, massages, body work and skin therapies — curated by celebrity facialist Thuyen Nguyen and Park Avenue dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiades, who holds three degrees from Harvard.
"When I went on my search for how to define this spa as opposed to anything anyone else would find, I wanted it to be under the ethos of Equinox, which is what we called MNR: movement, nutrition and regeneration," said Sarah Atereth, Equinox Hotel's spa director. "This spa is regeneration. I looked for clean brands that gave us wonderful results. I wanted partners that had wonderful stories, that came up with creative ideas and that I knew would be involved with us trainings and events."
Treatment highlights include the Nguyen-developed FaceXercise Ultimate Facial Workout, a contour and toning treatment for the face priced at $295 for 60 minutes, and the E.Massage, $245 for 60 minutes. There is also a 90-minute integrated circuit offering that includes the E.Massage, full body cryotherapy and quantum harmonics for the brain and body for $360. The quantum harmonics session is meant to put stressed-out New Yorkers and jet-lagged business travelers into a deep sleep.
"You feel like you’ve gotten three hours of sleep in 30 minutes," said Atereth.
The Spa by Equinox Hotels' offerings is part of a larger strategy by the company to further its stake in the wellness category beyond fitness. Equinox will be rolling out more hotels — Atereth declined to say when and how many — and the spa treatments will continue to be an integral part of the overall experience.
"People are more conscious and interested in health and wellness," said Atereth. "They’re looking for ways to achieve high performance and peace of mind. It’s a great time to be innovative and be able to help people find this new way to live."
