Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, better known to his 5 million+ YouTube subscribers as Doctor Mike, has spent the last several weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic doing his best to quell the spread of medical misinformation and conspiracy theories online. He’s been doing this by posting videos which dispel the fallacies and falsehoods being disseminated by non-experts, be they celebrities or ill-informed politicians, in a manner which is both educational and accessible for viewers.
And today, he will be sitting down with coronavirus expert Dr. Anthony Fauci from the Coronavirus Task Force and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to bust some more myths and serve up the most up-to-date, useful advice for people to follow while self-isolating.
It’s bound to be an illuminating discussion; Fauci has, after all, been tasked with providing the public with hard facts rather than platitudes, a responsibility which has made him unpopular with those who would rather hear platitudes from the president. Doctor Mike is of a similar belief that it’s important to acknowledge the uncomfortable truth that more often than not, there are no miracle cures, and that a lot of high-profile figures who profess to know everything, actually don’t.
“I’m a big fan of the phrase ‘I don’t know,'” he recently told Men’s Health. “It needs to be followed with ‘We don’t know, but here’s what we’re doing to find out,’ or ‘Here’s why we don’t know,’ and ‘Here’s why nobody would know.’ Because what happens is if you just leave it, ‘I don’t know,’ there’s a knowledge vacuum. People jump in. Sometimes like the president. Sometimes like a conspiracy theorist. They’ll come in and they’ll give their theory for what’s going on without much scientific backing.”
You can watch Doctor Mike’s interview with Fauci at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
