Jonathan Van-Tam says vaccine rollout 'must be finished'

The government sent a clear signal today that it believes the threat of COVID-19 will persist long after restrictions are lifted in June. A third jab is to be offered to everyone over 50 in the Autumn to expunge COVID-19 entirely by Christmas, The Times reported. Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, Dr Hilary revealed there are “two options” being discussed.

As Dr Hilary explained, the virus is not going to go away completely.

“We are not sure how long those antibodies will last so a booster shot will seem like a good idea,” he said.

The government is currently weighing up two options for the type of jab that will be on offer, explained Dr Hilary.

“The same one you’ve had or a different one to meet the demand of a new variant,” he said.

Dr Hilary added: “It’ll be one or the other.”

According to official information provided to The Times, the first jab involves vaccines specifically modified to tackle new variants.

The second is for a third shot of one of the three versions already in use: Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca or Moderna.

While the approved vaccines offer sufficient protection against the Kent variant, the amount of protection they offer against others, such as that from South Africa, is weaker.
