If your hair is looking a little limp and lifeless, it could be a consequence of your diet. Just like every other body part, your hair takes nutrients from what you eat. If your hair is thinning or falling out, it’s time to cut these five foods from your diet.
If you want to keep a full head of hair, making some changes to your diet might be necessary.
Nutrients from your food go to your scalp, hair follicles and hair itself; so what you eat has a direct effect on how healthy your locks are.
Eating hair-healthy foods can even encourage hair regrowth, make your hair thicker and slow down hair loss.
But equally important is avoiding foods that can damage your hair, making it brittle and likely to fall out.
Here are the five foods to avoid, to keep your hair in top condition.
Sugar
The usual suspect: sugar is one of the main culprits for causing hair loss.
Sugar can cause poor circulation which stops a healthy flow of blood making it all the way to the top of your head and your hair follicles.
This stops your hair follicles getting all the nutrients they need.
Sugar can also cause a spike in testosterone levels, causing hair to fall out.
Dairy
If you opt for full-fat dairy products like whole milk and cheeses, the fat in those dairy items can also trigger raised levels of testosterone.
Also, if you have any skin conditions causing an itchy, flaky, scalp like dandruff, eczema or psoriasis, dairy products can trigger a flare-up.
Swordfish
Swordfish contains comparatively high levels of mercury, so the NHS advises eating no more than one portion per week.

Aside from other health concerns associated with eating fish with traces of mercury, mercury interferes with your body’s ability to absorb zinc.
A zinc deficiency can cause your hair to thin and fall out.
Alcohol
You know how when you’ve had too much to drink, the next morning you wake up with a pounding headache, desperate for a glass of water?
That’s due to dehydration, and your hair feels the same way after a night on the town.
Drinking too much alcohol causes your hair to lack moisture, which can make it brittle and breakable.
Greasy food
Your scalp produces its own oil called the sebum, which keeps your hair moisturised and supple.
However, when you eat lots of grease, your scalp starts secreting more grease too, causing your hair to look greasy and drab.
This overload of grease upsets the delicate balance on your scalp, and as the hair follicle gets covered in grease it stops the hair from growing.
