Samantha Oliver, 33, always dreamed of becoming a mum but believed it wouldn’t be possible after she diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Incredibly, the stay-at-home mum fell pregnant after shedding five stone but a disastrous caesarean delivery saw her lose five pints of blood – and nearly her life.
Determined Samantha fought bravely with a 10cm blood clot in hospital to meet her son, Reuben.
Samantha from Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, said: ‘I was told I’d never have kids because of PCOS – I didn’t ovulate for 17 years.
‘After my second husband left, my life changed – I lost five stone in a year, became a personal trainer and fell pregnant!
‘My journey to becoming a mother was a long one and I nearly lost my life giving birth but I finally have my son and I couldn’t be happier.’
Samantha was just 17 years old when she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome – a health condition that affects how ovaries work.
Her periods were extremely irregular, which led doctors to the conclusion that she was not ovulating and therefore would not be able to have children.
Samantha said: ‘I wasn’t told much about the condition then, just that I would have irregular periods, it would cause weight gain that would be hard to lose and I’d have excess facial hair.
‘It wasn’t until I was married to my second husband that I was told that I had not been ovulating all this time because of PCOS and that I couldn’t have kids as a result.’
Doctors told Samantha that she would only be able to get pregnant if she took medroxyprogesterone tablets to regulate periods and and try to trigger ovulation.
If the tablets did not help, then she would have to consider IVF in order to become a mother.
After Samantha’s second marriage ended in 2016, she joined the gym to cope with her heartbreak.
Attending 11 gym classes a week and spending four hours a day in the gym, Samantha’s hard work paid off and she eventually became a PT..
Within just a month of a new relationship, she was pregnant.
She added: ‘I only found out that I was pregnant as I couldn’t stop being sick all day and I was in lots of pain but I was still in total shock when the pregnancy test came up as positive.
‘After years of not falling pregnant, I had made peace with the fact that I wouldn’t become a mother until I unexpectedly got my little miracle.
‘I was scared that I’d miscarry but I loved my pregnancy, especially when he would kick and dance in my belly to music I was listening to.
Samantha and her new partner split up soon after she fell pregnant but he supported her throughout the pregnancy.
She also developed gestational diabetes and was induced three weeks early after her 36-week scan indicated that there was reduced growth.
She was taken in for a planned cesarean section in September 2018 and gave birth to a healthy little boy.
Samantha was taken to recovery after the birth when she suddenly fell ill and had to be rushed back in for emergency surgery after losing five pints of blood.
‘The doctors rushed me straight into theatre and put me under to give me blood transfusions and plasma transfusions.
‘I was terrified, I told them I don’t want another surgery but the doctors said I had to and that they would be putting me to sleep this time.
‘They saved my life – if they hadn’t rushed me in when they did, I could have died and never been able to be the mother I had waited so long to be.’
Back in recovery, doctors scanned Samantha’s stomach and found a 10cm blood clot inside her stomach.
She was kept in hospital for another six days under surveillance but doctors thankfully did not have to operate for a third time.
Samantha was given a six week course of blood thinning injections and was able to return home with her baby boy.
Sadly, her C-section wound became infected and she was put on antibiotics which left her unable to breastfeed.
But despite all she’s been through, Samantha is overjoyed to finally be a mum.
Samantha said: ‘It’s been quite the journey to get here but I am finally a mother and I love my little boy with all of my heart.
‘Everything I do now is for me and him, nothing else matters.
‘He’s proper cute, love him. He’s been worth it all.’
