It wouldn’t be a proper Monday morning without a dose of celebrity mom-shaming, now, would it? Kim Kardashian West is on blast from trolls who are condemning her letting her firstborn daughter North, 5, wear black lipstick and a slip dress to a church service.
There’s some pertinent backstory here: Sundays have become something of a thing for the Kardashian-West crowd. The fam has taken to hosting Sunday church services with celeb guests and music by Kanye. This ain’t your grandma’s church, let’s get that straight.
Kardashian West posted this particular clip of this Sunday’s service on Twitter, captioned, “Her favorite part of the week is dancing during Sunday Service”:
Does North look like she’s rocking out at a Coachella for baby goths? Possibly — but church looks different for everybody, right?
And after all, the Bible totally endorses North’s churchy revelry. As Jesus said, “Let the little baby goths come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Okay, fine. He said “children,” not “baby goths,” but let’s not pick it apart, okay? North was in a great mood, so judge not, lest ye be judged and all that.
But on the eighth day, God also invented mom-shamers, who are going to judge anyway. “She’s adorable but why is she wearing lipstick to church. She’s too young for makeup in public,” one Twitter user scolded. Another Twitter user commented, “Um, isn’t she a little YOUNG to have dark lipstick on? and tons of it?? gimme a break already.”
Kardashian West has been a frequent target of mom-shamers when it comes to her kids (don’t tell us you missed Straightgate, when she ironed out North’s naturally curly locks). She and Kanye West share North, son Saint and baby daughter Chicago, but Kardashian West has been most often trolled for North’s style choices. (Note that Papa West rarely gets called out for his role in North’s young fashionista ways. Ahem.)

North West has already modeled on numerous occasions, and her mom is one of the most public, photographed figures in the world, so the black lipstick isn’t really fazing us. According to Kardashian West’s Instagram post about North’s cover gig for WWD (with North wearing pink eyeliner), North “loves fashion & beauty and has so much fun doing this!”

In December, cosmetics mogul Kardashian West also got publicly lambasted when North wore red lipstick to the family’s holiday party. Kardashian West replied, “She picked it though! It’s a special occasion” — and teased that the hue was from an upcoming cosmetics release. Clever marketing, Kim.
Previously, Kardashian West told Refinery 29 that black lipstick was pushing it: “I don’t think she should wear lashes or too dark of a lipstick. I want her to express herself, but I want her to be appropriate, too.”
Considering North is officially a beauty influencer now, we’re not surprised her mom (and dad) let that rule slide. Whatever the case, the kid is obviously living her best life — just like her mama. Amen to that.
